Keeping in mind I'll be traveling by train....does anyone have a suggestion of the best coastal town or village to visit that is the best representation of a "Scottish coastal village". I was thinking of Dunbar - but not sure there's enough to do for a day or half day trip. We are willing to go up to 2 hours away....if it's worth it. Also, what are the best pubs in Edinbugh best characterized as "for locals" as opposed to tourists. Thank you.
My favourite coastal 'town' to visit near Edinburgh would be St Andrews. The best way to check out "for the locals" pubs would be to look through the window or enter, sit and listen. Also the further from the tourist zone...the better are your odds.
I think that you could take the train to Dumfermline and then take the bus to Culross. It's a village with lots of historic sites to visit and see. Ask at the tourist office about transport. You could probably email them. ; ) When I went to Sandy's Bells near the university it seemed to me that it was mostly students and locals. But this was September and I suspect if you are there in August you can't escape the tourist because of the festival. In New Town, you might check out the Oxford Bar. This Ian Rankin's favorite pub, so you'll see some tourists, but I've heard that it's so small that the locals can practically push out the tourists. Look for pubs that aren't on The Royal Mile or on Rose Lane in New Town. ; ) Pam
