Decided that it would not only save money, but it might be more scenic to take a bus rather than a train. I have been to several web sites looking for a coach from London to Long Eaton Railway Station without success. The website for the place where we're staying the first week shows both trains and buses go to the Long Eaton Station.
Go to this website~~~http://www.traveline.org.uk/index.htmgo down under options and mark that you want info for coach trave. It's a four hour trip...you will leave from Victoria Coach station and then in Nottingham you will have to change to a coach to Long Eaton.
The National Express Coach (bus) company have some good deals on at the moment. http://www.nationalexpress.com/home.aspx Also look at the Megabus company http://uk.megabus.com/default.aspx
A "bus" in the UK is a local service with lots (usually)of stops normally on a vehicle with few if any amenities. Could be single decker, could be double decker, could be a hoppa bus not a lot larger than a van. A "coach" is inter-city (or inter-town) high floor single decker (unless its German) which normally has decent seating, tinted windows, and may have wifi. ^ ^ ^ If you catch the National Express 450 service it runs up the M1 motorway after a stop in Golders Green which is a northern London suburb. If you're on the Northern Line, its in zone 3 on the Edgeware Branch and might be more convenient than Victoria. Then again your favourite seat might be gone. It will take 3 and a half hours including a stop just off the M1 near Milton Keynes where connections are made. The entire journey, nearly, is on the motorway and while you will be able to see fields along the way the journey is much like a freeway anywhere - lots of trucks, cars, and congestion. ^ ^ ^ If you want close up scenery and comfort at a good price you could consider the train. If you plan ahead and buy tickets early you can go First Class for the same £15 you would pay for Standard Class tickets, the train goes straight there from St Pancras Station in London in 90 minutes stopping only in Leicester and Loughborough. You go right though the countryside, and along rivers. ^ ^ ^ The bus from Nottingham to Long Eaton, by the way, is a bus, not a coach.
Englosh trains are definitely more secnic than the motorways. Usually a pleasant journey. You can also move about which you cant do on a bus or coach.
