Clothing for August in U.K.

Our two teenagers and I are heading to London this Thursday. We'll be spending three weeks there and then another ten days in Scotland, visiting family. I've boiled in September and been frozen in June in the U.K. and would love to hear suggestions as to what to pack. Short sleeves? Long? How many? We'll each have a raincoat, a carry-on duffle and daypack. Thanks!

Layers, layers, layers. It's the only way in the UK. As you say, you've boiled in September and frozen in June. Did you really think that August would be different? Hah! I've gotten a Scottish suntan in Scotland in September, but have needed the woolen sweater in August. I always take a mix of short and long-sleeved shirts. I no longer take shorts, but have a couple of pairs of convertible pants that work well for also for the walking trips that I do. I have one black travel skirt on the off chance that I want to look snazzy. i take a pair of black pants. Always take the Goretex. Since I'm walking, I always take my hiking boots. Walking shoes won't cut it in the highlands. I take a fleece that can go under the goretex and then buy a beautiful new Scottish sweater. My absolute favorite shop is in Ullapool.

Hi Bonnie, when I've been in the UK in August I've never frozen. Some days I had on long sleeves and other days short sleeves, but was always comfortable. I did wear a sweater in the evenings or early morning a few days. The average temp in August is in the mid 60's. You will probably wear more short sleeves then long sleeves. Have a great trip.

The weather is a bit manic at the moment. We had winter a couple of weeks ago, heat wave recently and now it is autumn again. Layers are the best way to go.

Definitely layer to cover a lot of possible variations.

Bring your rain shell at all times. The wettest I've ever been in a lot of trips was one beautiful day in London. It was so nice I dropped my coat off at lunch, then came out of the British Museum to torrential rain three hours later.

You didn't say what gender the teens were, here's what I pack if it's helpful. It all fits easily in one convertible carry-on:

Hopefully it will give you ideas on what to pack and where to find it.

Thanks, everyone, for all the great ideas. Brad, your list was very helpful.
