Has anyone taken a Cliffs of Moher day trip from Dublin? How was it? Any recommendations? Thanks!
Day trip from Dublin? There are bus tours available, but it would be a VERY long day. The drive from Dublin is over three hours each way. I love the Cliffs of Moher, but I'd never do it as a day trip from Dublin.
IMO it is a long way to go for a peek at the cliffs. once there you can observe them fROM the edge for 10 min and that is it. I think your time/money could prob be best spent for something closer to Dublin.
I don't think it would be worth the trip just to see the cliffs. Without a car, I'd recommend doing a day trip to see Newgrange and Knowth for one. Glendalough and Powerscourt are also available as trips out of Dublin. There isn't an organized trip that I know of but a bus runs from Dublin Airport to Trim and you could see the castle. It would mean taking a bus to the airport and then switching to the Trim bus. I don't know if there is a direct shot.
The Cliffs of Moher are beautiful, but you can only stare at them so long. I can't see spending something like 6-8 hours on a bus to do something that takes only an hour. It's a bad ratio. And what if the weather is bad on the day you planned the tour? I wouldn't do it.
We drove it from Galway, on our way to Dingle. That was also a long day, so the cliffs were a stop on our way not a whole day experience for us.
Irish Rail (www.railtoursireland.com) does a one day tour that includes the Cliffs of Moher,Bunratty Castle,Burren and a few other things. It leaves Heuston Station at 7:00 and returns at 9:00 P.M. Cost is 109 Euro. They do several other tours, both one day and longer. I have taken a couple of them and found them to be both informative and enjoyable.
We saw the cliffs both from the top and from the bottom by boat. It was much more impressive from the top. Don't bother with the boat cruise. The boats are loud, little seating, and the cliffs so not look like anything special. From the top, however, they are spectacular.
