Clare County Attractions--Too much for one day?

Hi everyone,
I have researched this a little using the helplines but couldn't find something I was really looking for.

We arrive at Shannon airport at 7am and figure we should have our rental car and be out the door around 9:30 or 10am. We are going straight to Clare County as we are staying at the Emohruo B&B that night. Is it too much to see the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and the Ailwee cave in one day? We can't check into our B&B until after 3pm so I thought maybe this could take up the day? Also, which would be the best order to see them in?

I dont think jetlag will be an issue since last year we went all day the day we arrived in Rome.

I also want to get us to Dingle earlier the next day and I know the driving times are much longer then stated.

Thank you so much in advance!

Tracey, did you look up this B&B. Did you get the 10% discount. It is located on the Cliffs of Moher Rd. I don't know if the Burren is on the "road" towards Clare Country. If so you can see it as you drive to your B&B.

If my memory, and my map, is correct, Shannon Airport is in Co. Clare, so it won't take long to get there ;)

The Burren is an area and the Ailwee Cave is part of it so it depends on how much time you spend at the Cliffs and at the cave. I have not been to the cave, but I'm assuming it is like a lot of other caves. My guess is about 2 hours is "normal". Someone will have to answer that part.

The cliffs you can spend as little as an hour or as much as all day. Kind of depends on how much walking you want to do. If it is raining and the wind is blowing at about 40-50 mph like it was when we were there in '05, you won't be there long at all.

The order in which you see them is entirely up to you. Get a map and make a plan Stan; no need to be coy Roy; just let yourself go.

As for getting to Dingle early the next day, how early is early. I hope you have read some of the other posts about driving time between the Cliffs and Dingle. Since I have never driven that speed run, I can't be any help.

As Mr Tom said, when you land at Shannon you are in Co. Clare. The Cliffs of Moher are closest to the airport. They have a beautiful new visitor center with a lot of interpretive displays and great views, so you'll have plenty to do even if the weather doesn't cooperate fully. One caveat: the cliffs aren't at their best in the morning because of the direction of the light. You might want to check a map and head further up toward the Burren and Aillwee Cave first, then hit the Cliffs on your way back to your B&B. I believe the tour at Aillwee runs about an hour. We have visited many caves here in the States, and no one in our group was particularly impressed with Aillwee. Also, you don't say when you are traveling, and it may or may not be open depending on when you go.

If it were up to me, I would go first to Bunratty Castle, since it's only about six miles from the airport. Then I would head to the Burren (but I would skip Aillwee). It's a fascinating area to drive through. Then I would head back toward your B&B, seeing the Cliffs of Moher on the way.

As for the next day, the drive from Doolin to Dingle is shown on ViaMichelin as 3 hr 24 min, but I would plan for more like 4.5 hours. However, you can cut some time off of that by taking the car ferry across the Shannon between Killimer and Tarbert instead of going around through Limerick.

Miss B--Thank you for the notice about the discount but unfortunately we will only be there for one night.

We will be there in early September. I like the idea of going north through the Burren/Cave then down to the cliffs since our B&B is close to that.

We are actually staying in Bunratty the night before our flight out so we were planning on seeing the castle then.

Thank you again!

We did all three of those things in one day. We drove from Shannon, where we spent our first night, to the Cliffs, through the Burren and stopped at Ailwee before ending up in Galway for the night. It was a lot for one day, but we saw a lot and it was well worth it. We took off by 9 and ended up at our Galway B&B at about 6.

Ailwee Cave was pretty cool, but from what I remember, it was expensive. Unforutnately, we had a buy one get one coupon that I forgot about until it was too late.

Also, it took us a surprisingly short amount of time--less than an hour I think--from the time we arrived at Shannon Airport, went through customs and picked up our rental car and got on the road. You never know how long it might take, but I would guess you'll be on the road well before 10.

Nancy has a great idea on visiting the cliffs in the afternoon. If the weather is clear, a late afternoon would make for some wonderful lighting conditions.

Has anyone done the Doolin cave instead of Ailwee? I noticed on the B&B website this was only 15 minutes from the B&B.

I'm not much for caves but my in-laws would like to see one.

Thanks!

We stayed in Ballyvaughan, then drove around the Burren (not the Ailwee cave, but we made several stops), went to the Cliffs of Moher for about an hour or so, then drove to Dingle in one day (got there in time for dinner). It was a great day. I liked the Burren much more than I expected. I would have liked to spend more time there, maybe hiked a bit more, but I feel like we saw a good deal of it.

I was "researching" the Cliffs of Moher. I wanted to see what the new Visitor Center looks like and if you are still able to get to the cliffs edge to look over/down. I went to Bing.com and typed in Cliffs of Moher Visitor's Center. There are LOTS of websites and pictures you can look at for those of you going to that area, The Burren and other places. Very interesting.
Parking at the Cliffs is $10.00.
