1st trip to Scotland with 9 m/o son late summer...having trouble deciding where to plant ourselves for the week as a home base to see Inverness & the surrounding Highlands. Preferences/opinions as to staying in the country or the city to explore the area? We enjoy both!
I vote for Inverness or one of the surrounding towns. I've stayed in Strathpeffer and I think that the Black Isle would be lovely. You can get to many places from Inverness--Toni, chime in here! ; ) I would find a nice small hotel that likes families and then venture out daily. With the baby, it might be better to have a car which would give you more flexibility than tours. Cawdor Castle has lovely gardens. You could go to Fort George or Culloden-lots of places to walk and see things. You can get to Loch Ness and Urquart Castle. Glen Afric is beautiful and not far. You can catch a train to the west coast, or to the Cairngorms.
The only thing that Glasgow or Edinburgh would have over this might be children's museums, but he's a bit young for those, yet , isn't he ?
Have a wonderful time and take back again when he's older. ; )

With a 9 month old it won't be feasible for you to be trying to see the Highlands on day trips from Edinburgh or Glasgow. Not if by "Highlands" you mean as far north as Inverness, anyway. For that you'll want to stay in Inverness.
Happy to "Chime in"- Yes- stay in Inverness. With a baby a car might be best (horror- did I really say that?) though I always advocate for train travel. Then again- a train might be even easier. The train restrooms generally have good baby-changing facilties. There is LOTS to do from Inverness. Whiskey tours, Culloden, curises up Loch Ness and on the Firth, Isle of Skye and Eliean Donnan Castle, etc. check out Puffin Tours- they do small van tours to LOTS of areas. We love to stay at the Royal Highland Hotel- it is right next to the station and very convient for walking around the city itself.
Thank you so much! You've given me lots to consider. We are definitely renting a car once outside Edinburgh - Thanks!
