I'm planning on being in London next week with my wife and two teen boys and we definitely want to see the war rooms (especially since the IWM is closed for WWI centennial renovation). Is it necessry to purchse tikcets in advance it we want to go on Thursday? We'll have Nat'l Rail Travelcards so can use the 2For1 discount. Thanks!
If you are using the 2 for 1 Days Out scheme you must buy tickets from the booking office at the attraction, demonstrating your eligibility by presenting the completed voucher and showing your valid rail ticket, in this case the Travelcard which is valid and from a National Rail booking office.
I doubt if it will be too crowded on a weekday, though maybe more so because the Imperial War Museum is closed. It's a great place to visit. It helps you understand how close the British came to losing everything, and what a different and more awful world that would have meant for us and everyone else. There's a recording of the diary of one of the high-ranking military guys in September 1940, expecting a German invasion any day and gradually becoming more hopeful, and finally delighted, that it wasn't coming. And you see the room with all the maps with pins showing who was where the day the war ended, after which they turned off the lights, locked the doors, and left the place untouched till the 1970s. Quite an experience.
I went on a Saturday afternoon in the middle of July last summer and had 2-3 people ahead of me. I don't see any reason to book ahead.
We were three a couple of weeks ago. There was just a few people ahead of us, and then we walked right up to the ticket window. We did not get there early, although more people came later in the day. It was absolutely fascinating.
We visited during the Jubilee last year and had no wait. It's a wonderful place to visit. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
Thanks everyone! We'll get the tickets on the day.
