What is the dress code for visiting churches and cathedrals in Ireland, Scotland and England?
Be respectful.
I've never noticed a code particularly, but you want to be respectful. I've been in some churches in my hiking clothes and not felt out of place. But I think that general suggestion to not wear shorts or "beach wear" is reasonable. I'm going to have to remember to ask my local Scottish friends about this one! ; )

No dress code that I'm aware of for Ireland and England, so I'd imagine Scotland would be similar. In fact, I've found most of Ireland to be even more casual than here in southern California.
I haven't seen a dress code in Northern Europe but I don't think I've ever pushed any limit with my normal attire.
There aren't the notices specifically banning bare legs/shoulders that you often see in Catholic or Orthodox countries, but use some common sense.
I've seen people in shorts and women in strappy tops in churches and it doesn't seem to be a problem. With the small churches you may not see a member of staff at all. I'm only talking about going in churches to look around; I don't know what the rule is for services.
