Christmas time in Ireland?

I am thinking about spending Christmas in Ireland next year with my family. Has anyone spent the holidays in Ireland? We would be staying a week in Killarney and then maybe traveling to Dublin for 3 to 4 days. Any suggestion?

So many places are closed in the winter, especially away from the bigger cities. Also, have you noticed how awful the weather has been?

I did hear that this year Ireland has had some terrible weather. I thought we were having global warming? Anyways, I have been to Germany, Austria and Prague for Christmas and I enjoy the winter weather because I live in Southern California and it is nice to experience colder weather for me. I just hope we can drive our car from the airport to our hotel. It is normally 35- 45 degrees in Ireland at Christmas. I guess we will just have to take the weather that we are given next Christmas. I was wondering if the restaurants will be open on Christmas and Christmas Eve. I did email a few restaurants and they said they would be open on those days. I think it will be fun just experiencing Ireland at the holidays. We may end up in a different pub every day if all the tourist sights are closed.

With the exception of Christmas day itself, most major tourist sites are open during the Christmas season. Some may have reduced hours, however.

Thanks Nancy for the information. We will also be there for New Years eve and day so I am expecting the same closures for those days too? Maybe not since they are not a holy day?
