I know that in recent years there have been a number of elaborate seasonal Christmas markets in England--in Bath, Winchester, and Birmingham, at least. Anybody know any others that shouldn't be missed? We're thinking about a last minute trip to the UK in late November.
We used to go every year in late Nov/early Dec. We haven't been able to go for a couple of years, but based on our previous travels this is what I experienced:
Bath has a very large market that seems to be a blend of th traditional German imports and some local craftsmen. Cardiff has a smaller market that seems to be all local- with excellent craftsmen, as do Canterbury and York. Swansea has a mid-sized mixed market. Windsor has a French market. Edinburgh has a traditional German market- very good.
We often paired our trips- a few days in the UK and a few in Austria. Vienna has several markets, but Salzburg has the best!
Most have a website. Do some searches to see what you can find.
How odd..... as a Scot living in Germany I have to come to Germany to find out from an American that there is a German christmas market in my home town of Edinburgh. Thanks Toni....do you know where it's held?
When we were there several years ago, it was right on Princes St. above the park. Lots of high quailty booths.
I think there is a Christmas Market in Lincoln as well. Lincoln is indeed the "jewel" of England and worth a visit. Master cathedral, a castle with one of the 4 copies of the Magna Carta, and Steep Hill.
Lincoln is wonderful but check their web page as it is only for around 1 week, and you have to change trains if you are going from London, however I went early in the morning and came back later that night as the whole of the old town is turned into the market. Last year London had more Christmas markets then I remember in past years, there is a huge one in Hyde Park with rides, food, ice rink and the wooden huts like in Germany, also along the Thames River by Festival Pier.
