Christmas lunch in a London Pub

Our family will be in London over the 2008 Christmas holiday. We would appreciate some recommendations for holiday meals while we are there. Thanks!

You're right about there being no public transport on Christmas Day, and very little on the 26th. It''s also not true to say stations will be open - no trains run in the UK on the 25th and very few on the 26th, with the exception of the Express trains to Gatwick and Heathrow.

I would anticipate the majority of pubs and restaurants also being closed some, or all, of these two days but some will of course be open. You won't be the only tourists in town!

There's a list of restaurants within a mile of Paddington here

Some of e-mail or on-line booking so you can contact them in advance and find out the situation.

Have a good time

Do you mean lunch on Christmas Day itself? If so, you need to get a move on as most will have started taking bookings in July and many will be fully booked by now. A lot of the chain pubs do Christmas lunches which are okay. They are not exactly haute cuisine, but are more reasonably priced than some places. E.g. I went to a local branch of Beefeater last Christmas and it was about £60 per person on Christmas Day or about £35 per person for the Christmas meal on other days. The local independent pub was approximately £80 for Christmas Day.

Whereabouts are you thinking of going?

We're staying in the Paddington area, and since tube service may be limited on the holidays (24th - 26th), we'd like to find pubs within walking distance. Any further suggestions? Thanks.

The train stations have pubs and other eating places. Since people will be traveling on the holiday probably, these may be your best bets for food. There was a decent looking pub in the Paddington train station and some along Praed St. which runs along the front of the train station. Victoria Station has an entire food mall on its upper level, including everything from fast food places to real restaurants and pubs.

Hi Ellen, contact your hotel or B&B that you will be staying in and ask them if they places within walking distance that will be open for Christmas dinner. Also, ask if you need reservations.

tube service may be limited, but you can always hop in a taxi. I think a London taxi can seat up to 5 people.

We're in the Paddington area, and we'll probably want some place within walking distance. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
