Is it possible to get cheap seats for Mama Mia (in London)if you go to the theatre on the day of the show or ???? - any other suggestions. We would love to go but the tickets are so much above our budget.
I would love someone out there to offer some suggestions.
For what it's worth, on my last visit to London last November, tickets were not available at the discount ticket booth during my week long visit. Tickets were only available at the theater box office at full price, and only single tickets were left. The show has gotten so popular, that on my last day (Saturday), they actually had three performances!
I can't say whether there will be any available tickets for Mama Mia at the tkts booth, but if there are some, they (like all popular shows) will go fast. Be sure to know exactly where the booth is ahead of time and when it opens and be in line before it opens.
...but tickets for "popular" shows typically aren't sold at the TKTS booth, at least not at a discount. Most discount tickets are available for shows on the "push" list, and are having problems filling their theaters.
It's certainly worth a try to go to the theatre the day of, just to see. You might get lucky. If it's really important to you, you might see if there are single seats that are nearby each other (one behind the other, for example).
I have bought a lot of tickets at the TKTS booth in the last 10 years and Mamma Mia is one show that I have never seen at a discount at the booth. They do sell it there, but almost always at full price. The TKTS website gets updated each day with what is on sale. You will notice today that Mamma Mia is sold, but it is at full price.

Lookup Mamma Mia on the website theatremonkey.com. This site has tips on where you can buy tickets and sometimes includes info about discounts. It will also list the website of the agent that manages the official box office. While full price tickets are often 60+ GBP, most shows will have seats in the rear or upper circle for less than half of that. Consider buying in advance online. You will likely have the best option if you buy mid-week and purchase in advance. Theatremonkey also has seating charts and opinions on where to sit.
Mama Mia is playing at the Prince of Wales Theatre,
Coventry Street, you can go to the box office at the theatre to get tickets they start at £38.50 to the best at £79.00.
Margaret,
As a previous post mentioned, I also found that tickets for Mamma Mia were not offered at the half-price TKTS booth. However, I'd suggest checking there anyway, in case they happen to be listed on the day you want to see the show.
As I recall, Mamma Mia is at the Prince of Wales Theatre, which isn't far from the TKTS booth in Leicester Square. When I found that discounted tickets weren't available, I just walked to the Theatre and bought my ticket at the box office, as I really wanted to see the show (IMHO, it was worth the cost!).
The show is quite popular so I doubt you'll be able to find cheap tickets.
Good luck and happy travels!
Thanks so much for all your help. I can see now that I can find seats within our budget. I have used this site a number of times and people are so generous and helpful.
Thank you to all the kind fellow travelers out there, who go to the trouble to help out with suggestions.
I think your best bet will be to buy in advance.
I just went to theater box office site which is www.delfontmackintosh.co.uk (again, I got this info from theatremonkey.com). On this site, they show that the least expensive seats are 20 GBP. Prices go up to 62.50 GBP for standard seats (they also have premium seats for more). They charge a 1.75 internet booking fee. I plugged in the date of Wednesday, May 5th and they have seats as low as 21.75 (including the internet booking fee). I tried the same thing with a date next week and the lowest price seat available is 41.75 GBP. So if you want the best possibility of getting an inexpensive seat, I'd suggest that you buy in advance on the web. You can choose to pick up at the box office on the day of performance.
When I have a particular show that I want to see and I don't want to risk waiting for last minute tickets, I buy in advance. I have found the theatremonkey.com site to be a tremendous source for identifying options for purchase and which seats to choose.
We were in London last summer and tried to get tickets at the theatre -- we were told to come back in 2-3 months and maybe something would be available then. This show is consistently sold out -- it's not a huge theatre. We were there last week, and I didn't see any discounted tickets available for it anywhere. I had ordered my tickets from the theatre several months ago. Expensive, but worth it to us.
