Hello folks. I am going to be working in Oxford,England in Aug. and Sept. and am hoping to make weekend trips to Edinburgh ad Dublin. I won't have a car so I need a place that is close to sites and safe for a single gal. ALL recommendations are SO appreciated!!
In Dublin you might try the Harding Hotel. It is listed in Rick's book and I understand that has been newly refurbished. I have stayed there on several occasions and always found it fine.

I just returned from Dublin and stayed at Avalon House which is a hostel. It is very well run; I was booked on the 3rd floor with familes. The young, noisy types were kept on lower floors. Since I was there on a Saturday, I can truly vouch for the quiet I experienced as the norm. I had a single room ensuite for 37 euros. It's not fancy - to say the least - but it is clean and safe. The staff was very nice. Oh, and I am a 59 year old woman who was traveling alone.
Check out the Royal Brittish in Edinburgh. It is literally across the street from the railroad station. It is a nice walk from there to the Royal Mile and you have a nice view down Princes Street.
Greetings
Unless you really want to come for the Festivals, you might want to plan on making your Edinburgh weekend in September. August can be great fun in Edinburgh, but accommodation prices can be very high and things book quickly. Also it can be a noisy time to be in the city centre at night, so not great for light sleepers. September is often the best month to visit because the weather's still good, but it's relatively tranquil and uncrowded.
For Edinburgh, I think a B&B is great for single travelers, as they often have cheaper prices and a bit more of the comforts of home. Edinburgh Uni also has B&B rooms which are a reasonable price, but they will definitely go quickly for August dates.

Thanks everyone for your help so far! Kate-do you recommend some good B&B's? I am finding that for both Dublin and Edinburgh --many of the places are already sold out so the more suggestions the better! Yes I'm thinking of visiting Edinburgh in Sept. (after the festival)
Thanks again everyone for your suggestions!
