Cheap and Cheerful London Food

Does anyone have suggestions for Cheap and Cheerful places to eat between Paddington Station and Fleet Street, Temple areas? In the past I have eaten a LOT of sandwiches from Tesco and Waitrose and Pret, but they get old very fast! I'm looking for tasty, quick places to eat which are wallet and time friendly. Time is money! Also, any opinions about Stock Pot and eating at St. Martin's In The Fields? I especially like British desserts. Yum! I can almost taste the Victoria Sponge Cake, now.

We found Pret A Manger to be a good quick stop with good sandwiches and some other hot items. Pubs can offer some good cheap meals as well. The Princess of Wales Pub near Embankment was great when we went there. The Roundhouse Pub in Covent Garden was also great.

I've eaten at Stock Pot (although it has been five years ago). Still dreaming about the sponge cake with whatever that creamy sauce is....lovely. The food was ok too, you really do get mushy peas and kind of surly but sweet wait staff.

Look for a Cafe Rouge...many are in the London area, and are good...

We've eaten at St Martin's in the Field crypt a couple of times - most recent was a big bowl of tasty soup and bread pudding for dessert; cheap and delicious! Another recommendation, just a block from the Embankment tube stop - Gordon's Wine Bar. You get a couple of big slabs of cheese and a hunk of baguette; one plate served my teenaged daughter and me for a great dinner under 10 GBP.

If you are in any of the two areas that "Le Relais de Venise L'Entrecôte" restaurant is located in London, you might want to try it, (if it is in your budget). Our bed and breakfast has recommended it. For about $25 you get salad, Steak with a special sauce, French Fries. Dessert is extra. There are no other choices on the menu except for desserts. You tell the waitress how you would like your steak cooked. Lines form out the door and they do not take reservations. They opened one in NYC that was tried a few weeks ago. Fun too. "Just a short stroll away from Oxford Street, 'Le Relais de Venise L'Entrecote' is situated on Marylebone Lane in the heart of the elegant residential village of Marylebone." The web sites are .... http://www.relaisdevenise.com/marylebone/ ... Their other location in London "the City" "Situated in the heart of the City in London's financial district just off Old Broad Street, we are a new restaurant in a new, modern building, close to visitor attractions such as St Paul's Cathedral and the Barbican"... http://www.relaisdevenise.com/city/

Sherrie - I've also had a good experience at St Martin's in the Fields and would eat there again.

there are many small independent sandwich shops around London (get off the main streets and you will find them). I enjoyed Stock Pot. Pub lunches (pies, ploughmans lunch, special of the day), you can still find baked potato places (with various fillings), pasties (I buy mine at Harrods or Selfridges- still the best), curry, chinese (try the dim sum in Chinatown), fish and chips if you can find them. Museum cafes- I like National gallery. PUbs, Pubs, Pubs.
