I am thinking of doing an excursion from London to Chartwell. I understand it's a 45-minute train ride, and then a taxi ride. Has anyone been there? Is it worth a morning?
Yes, it's well worth the trip. You'll need to spend a couple hrs there to see everything. You might also want visit the Cabinet War Rooms in London to see where Churchill had to work during WWII.
Chartwell is fascinating. It is as it was when Sir Winston and Lady Churchill lived there and hosted many famous and historical figures. Try to do it on a fair day when you can enjoy the beautiful grounds. There's a cafeteria on site.
I just loved Chartwell. They say they keep his office just as it was the last time he sat at his desk (cigar in the ashtray and all). I also recommend you visit the cabinet war rooms in London.
What they all said, plus. The area where he painted is very much as it was. The grounds, patio, view - all very nice. Being on the South Downs is a good experience, particularly on a nice day. We drive, from a good distance. I'd check the train ride, it sounds a little optimistic.
thank you for your advice! And if anyone else has thoughts, please post. Craig
