we will be based in Lancaster for one week...with a car.
tell me about the smaller, charming villages that we should see.... we are not afraid of driving across to the east side!
You are close enough to the Yorkshire Dales to go exploring there. Lots of adorable little villages and towns await your discovery. And it is utterly gorgeous countryside. I looooove the Yorkshire Dales. Here is a list of towns and villages. I won't regale you with my favorites - you will find your own! (Okay - Boulton Abbey is gorgeous.) http://www.yorkshiredalesengland.co.uk/towns-villages-yorkshire-dales.php
What about a trip to the Forest of Bowland which is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? Some magnificent moorland scenery with wooded valley bottoms. It's that blank area on the map to the east of Lancaster! Clitheroe is an old and typical market town with a small Norman castle. http://www.visitlancashire.com/destination-guide/forest-of-bowland-aonb
thanks so much for the ideas...i will check each out! we were going to stay in kent (but a timeshare made the choice for us) and i had made many choices for visiting in the kent countryside...so much to see! but, now it will have to be another trip.
Don't know how it slipped my mind (senior moment?) but Lancaster is no distance from the Lake District. One of the most beautiful places in England. http://www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/index/visiting.htm Edit - yes do visit Kent sometime, it does seem to get overlooked. I may be biased but, as you say, lots to see and do including pretty villages and countryside.
