Charming town or village an hour or so from Heathrow?

We will probably end up spending the last night before our afternoon flight relatively near Heathrow, but we've been in London many times and would like to stay somewhere outside the city this time. NOT an airport hotel. We are willing to travel by train or bus an hour or a bit more, and we'd like to be able to walk around in the evening and enjoy a nice local dinner. We were thinking of Oxford or Henley-on-Thames (my husband is a former competetive rower) but I don't know if these fit the criteria. Other possibilities? Thanks so much.

Windsor is close by to Heathrow. I stayed in Henley on thames once it was great but I thought a car was necessary.

I went to a meeting at the Swan at Streatley in the 90's. It was lovely. The town was small and the area reminded me of Wind in the Willows. There's a small old church. It's on the train line to London. http://www.swanatstreatley.co.uk/ Pam

Hi Lola, going to Heathrow by train from Oxford you would have to take the train into London, change trains to Heathrow and it's a 1hr 45min trip~~~~Henley-on-Thames getting to Heathrow by train would be an 1hr and 30min trip and involves two changes. I would suggest staying in Windsor it's a 15 minute taxi ride. There you could walk around, walk to Eton it's a 7 minute walk, walk to Windsor Great Park which is about a 5-7 minute walk. They have some great pubs where you could eat.

Thanks! Windsor sounds great. We really do not want to have to go into London first. oxford came up as I thought I found a direct bus service, but maybe that is tied to the university terms or something.

Lola, there is a direct bus from Oxford to Heathrow it takes between 1hr 20min to 1hr 40min depending on traffic. But if there is an accident or road work it could take longer...I still think Windsor would be better.

Here's the information on transportation between Oxford and Heathrow/ http://www.tourinaday.com/oxford/heathrow-to-oxford.html See also this discussion on Tripadvisor for travel from Oxford to Heathrow. ttp://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g186361-i440-k84030-Transportation_from_Heathrow_to_Oxford-Oxford_Oxfordshire_England.html I figured that there had to be transportation of some sort that was easier than going into London City Centre and there is. From Streatley, you could take the train to Reading and catch the bus mentioned on the first link. Alternatively there is also taxi service. http://www.oxicars.com/ Google Oxford Heathrow transportation for more information. Pam

A huge Thank You! to you all for suggesting Windsor. It is indeed a much better option than Oxford, and I'm having fun looking at B&B's there. And a big bonus[INVALID]-we will be there on a Monday night, when there will be horse racing at Windsor. I might even cut a night off our Spain trip so we can spend 2 nights in Windsor and have a full day to explore.

So good that you like the idea of Windsor. I have been many times and I never tire of a visit there. Also Eton College is a meer 10 min walk down hill and boating on the Thames close too. Enjoy! You can even have tea for alot less than in London's 5 star hotels. Ck The Crooked House nr the TI in Windsor.
