We will leave early from our hotel in central London (Westminster Tube or St. James Tube) to Kings Cross Station to train to Newcastle. Should we take the tube, bus or taxi? Our train leaves at 8:30 a.m.
You'll want to be at Kings Cross around 8:00- 8:15. Surface traffic at that time of the morning will be awful. Take the tube. It appears that simply taking the Circle line from either station will be the easiest thing to do. But do check for 'Engineering works'. The tube trip should take 15-30 min. according to the journey planner on the TfL site (tranport for London)
journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/ I'd allow a bit of extra time- maybe try to be on the tube by 7:30. If you get to Kings Cross early, you can grab a bite of breakfast or pick up some snacks to eat on the train.
Thanks Toni. Sounds like good advice!
If you do arrive early and you should, there's a Pret a Manger where you can grab some sandwiches for the train ride. The station looks wonderful now after the upgrade. Enjoy.
If you are not tied into by bookings to one specific departure, trains also operate very frequently to Newcastle Central on East Coast and also less frequently to Sunderland which is a Newcastle suburb by Grand Central as well with Grand Central being closer to the North Sea once it leaves York.
Thanks, Thomas. We are actually going to visit some relatives that live in Tynemouth, North Shields. I was told that Newcastle is very close (1/2 hour taxi ride) to their home. I haven't purchased train tickets yet. Our trip isn't until the middle of September and I guess you are only able to buy online 12 weeks out. But I booked a fake trip the end of July and East Coast did pop up at 16 BP each. Our cousin did say that the Newcastle station to book on is NCL and not the airport or metro. Anything else we should know? We plan to just take a taxi to their home once we arrive. Thanks.
