I will be in London, Dorset & Dartmoor and want to buy 2 pay-as-you-go phones. I was looking at the Call As You Go company, which sends the phones to you before you leave. Has anyone had any dealings with them? Can I trust that they know enough about British cell phone requirements to get me the right phones? Or should I wait until I am in London? Has anyone found a reliable cell phone store there?
I would wait until you're in London. You can also bring an unlocked cell phone that has a quad band signal reception (most Nokia phones have this) and just buy a SIM card when you arrive. My wife and I brought our T-Mobile phones to London and used them when we needed them, but had to pay 99 cents a minute (which meant if we called each other, it was only $1.98 a minute, fortunately we only did that once when were split up).
We do not pay to receive calls on UK networks. This looks like a good deal.
£4.95 for a pay-as-you-go handset at the Carphone Warehouse and top it up with £10 credit.

They have stores in most town centres
PS forgot to say with that deal calls to the US are 20 pence per minute. Although calls are charged by the second there is a 15 pence minimum charge per call.
Thanks to Dave & Linda. I think I will wait until I am in London. My question about Carphone Warehouse is: can I buy a phone there the same day that I go to the store or must I order it online before? Their website does not say. I called there but got put on hold.
Buy them when you get there. Unless there are crowds mobbing the counter because of the price, should not take very long!
Have a great holiday and hope the weather is kind, you are going to a lovely part of the country.
