What 's the latest thought on getting/using a simple cell phone in the UK? I don't want to be stuck carrying converters, so wondered if you can still buy a cheap phone at the airport/anyone know what's available? Annette, Arkansas

I asked about this last summer and concluded that it could be done, but then decided to get an iPhone instead. So, yes, I think you can do it. I didn't get far enough into my research to determine what would be the best company. You might post on the TripAdvisor forum where there are locals who respond. They could likely give very good advice.
BTW, anyone going the iphone route needs to remember to turn off the data flow. I didn't get caught by the huge fees, but I sure have heard the horror stories.

Have a look at these people, Carphone Warehouse, for cheap unlocked PAYG handsets and good deals on calling plans. There is also a store locator on the site. People have reported plans with charges of 5p per minute to the USA. And no-one charges for incoming calls in the UK.
