Castles in Scotland

I am planning my first trip to Scotland and was wondering if ayone had stayed in any castles and is it worth it to do so?

I stayed in a castle in Germany and found accommodations restrictive. Cold and damp. But that may not be true in all castles. It is the adventure that appeals to us.

For me it is not worth the extra cost to spend the night in a castle. Now I know I would prefer a comfortable B&B or motel room.

If you choose one, be sure to read the comments from other travelers about the castle you select. Research the castle webpage to be sure.

I stayed at Stonefield Castle near Tarbert in Argyle. It was very posh and very nice. I was there to attend the Tarbert Music festival--great bands from Glasgow that mix traditional music with a contemporary sound. I also spent my 45th birthday at the Carbisdale Castle, a Youth Hostel in Lairg Scotland. It's north of Inverness and was a lot of fun. It would be the opposite of Stonefield. I would try another castle or go back to either of these.

Linda -
We stayed in a twin single room (my mom and I) at Borthwick Castle (just south of Edinburgh) for my 30th birthday. We knew that Mary, Queen of Scots, had stayed at this particular Castle so we were intrigued. What we didn't know was that they offered a formal dinner for guests and visitors as well. It was FANTASTIC!!! Then they will take you on a tour of the Castle and give you a history lesson as well. On this tour you won't get to see the room that MQOS stayed in (which I wanted to do!) since someone is typically staying there. However, the next morning after breakfast, the guests of that room had vacated and told me that I could go up and take a peek - they'd left the door slightly ajar.

Take a look at www.visitscotland.com following the links for accommodation. Also www.nts.com which is the website for the National Trust for Scotland website. Some very interesting properties to stay in though mainly self-catering.
