Hello, Ireland lovers! I am trying to figure out a way to get from Kings Court (at the intersection of Co. Cavan, Co. Meath, and Co. Monaghan) (about 11 km SW of Carrickmacross) to Galway, by train. I will be in Ireland at the end of April. I wouldn't mind taking a bus, if that would give me better options, but I have a romantic notion of going by rail. One option I considered is getting over to M1 and riding south to Dublin and then taking a train from Dublin to Galway. I'll happily accept any input that would help me decide!
According to the Journey Planner on the Bus Eireann site, bus #177 stops at Carrickmacross on its way from Monaghan to Dublin. You could take the bus to Dublin and the train from there to Galway. Dublin has two train stations. Trains to Galway depart from Heuston station. See the Irish Rail site for timetables. Or you could take bus #177 as far as the Dublin airport and bus #X20 from there to Galway.
Thanks for the tip! I'll look into it. I love how everyone is so eager to share ideas and give advice on the Helpline.
