My wife and I plan to pick up a car rental in Oslo early on Thursday, 29 August 2013, to explore the Gudbrandsdal Valley, the Jotunheimen Mountains and Sognefjell Drive, the Nigard Glacier, then cruise the various Fjords by car ferry with dropping the car off in Bergen on Sunday, 1 September. Does anybody have suggestions for a car rental agency OR suggestions for this route in general over what RS already has in his latest book or in his videos? Larry
Sorry I'm only offering very indirect advice again (like in your Trondheim question)... But here's one thing to point out. Norway has a very non-intuitive system of toll collection. As best as I could surmise, here's how it works. You will see signs on the road indicating that you have entered a toll zone. However, there are no booths or machines to pay. The car is photographed as it moves through the toll marker. You have three options for payment- you can pre-purchase and register a voucher. You can exit the road immediately and pay at the next petrol station. Or, you can wait until your credit card gets billed when the system matches your rental car to your rental contract. Therefore, ask the rental agency how it handles toll payment. It may be already bundled in the overall cost of your rental, or you may need to pre-pay.
We're heading over in mid-September ourselves and are renting in Bergen. I have found the best prices at Kemwel Car Rental. We've used them many times on the continent and have always been pleased at the prices, service, and cars. Be sure to get the "inclusive" package that includes collision insurance. Not a good idea to rely on your insurance company or Visa/MC to take care of it. BTW, that sounds like a very aggressive itinerary for three days. Check distances and times - you might be taking on more than is comfortable. Happy travels!
Alan, Thanks for the suggestion using Kemwel, we have never used them, but will look into it. The trip from Oslo to Bergen by car will be three nights and four days. Does that sound doable? Larry
