Car rentals - ferries

Which car rental companies all their vehicles on the Skye ferry?

What makes you think there might be a poblem? In the pre-bridge days we used to use the ferry all the time without thinking about it. Most of the car-on-a-ferry prohibitions have to do with RoI/NI transitions.

I don't think it's a problem. I know my friend rented a small bus for one trip. I've taken rental cars on the Puget Sound ferries. If it were a problem, ther would be lots of rental shops at the fery port in places like Stornoway and I didn't see one we landed. Nor did I see one at Tarbert when we left for Uig. ; ) Did someone suggest that there would be a problem? If you are taking the car to Ireland or Scandinavia that would likely be different, but it still might just be huge costs. When we went to Orkney last time, we rented a car on Orkney and picked up another in Inverness. I'm not sure that would make sense though in the Western Isles. Pam

Budget won't allow their cars to go on the ferry. AutoEurope says they give permission on a case by case basis and will set the additional fee after we make a reservation.

I guess I wouldn't see the need to tell them your itinerary. I've never had anyone ask if I planned to take a rental car on a ferry.

It's probably in the fine print of the rental. If the ferry goes down, you're likely responsible for the car or something like that. I too have taken a rental car on a ferry--Oban to Mull. I posted this question on TripAdvisor and will be interested to see if I learn anything. You could also ask Visitscotland. They have a website and you can email them. My experience is that they get back to you. Let us know if you learn anything. I think I was with National or Hertz when I went to Mull. Pam

We have taken Hertz cars on the ferry to Skye, Lewis, and also some of the shorter trips. We never asked - neither did they.

The considered opinion of the TA locals is that as long as you stay within the UK there is no problem with ferries. The exception is taking the car to Ireland. Pam
