I'm starting to get info for renting a car in December. We are taking the ferry to Rosslare, from Fishguard, Wales and then dropping the car off somewhere easy in Dublin (don't care as long as it's relatively easy to get to public transportation so we can get to Dun Laoghaire without a car. Has anyone picked up a car at Rosslare? Any advice would be appreciated. thanks
Are you just planning to drive to Dublin, or do some other driving before that?
Yes, it's very easy to pick up your car in Rosslare. The car rental agencies are inside the ferry terminal building on the shore, and the cars themselves are right next to that.
I would advise NOT driving into downtown Wexford until you feel very comfortable with the more navigable Irish roads. The highway near Rosslare is nice and wide open, though.
We were able to drop off the car at Dublin's international airport, for a relatively small extra fee. However, that is north of Dublin and Dun Laoghaire is a bit south. Still, I found that the public transportation from the airport into central Dublin is fairly cheap, and it's not all that far.
The southeast countryside is quite lovely, so I'm sure you will enjoy your drive!
We are planning on driving to Cork to see the area that my husband's family is from and then up to Dublin via Cashel. We're taking the ferry to Wales. Our plan is to spend the night in Rosslare (the ferry gets in at 6), get the car in the morning, spend the night in Cork, the next night in Cashel and then two nights in Dun Laoghaire. We are traveling with our 2 young adult daughters.
