3 of us will be traveling to Ireland from Aug. 12 - 23 and will be landing at Dublin Airport. Since none of us have driven on left side of road or driven a standard shift in quite a while, I am wondering how hard it would be to take public transportation from airport with our luggage (all adults) to pick up our car rental in Walkinstown and then drive on to Waterford. Any advice you could share would be helpful. Also, does anyone know the best mode of public transportation to get from the Airport to this area. Is there a better area to try to pick up a rental car and then head out of town? Looking to rent through Auto Europe and this is the car rental location that seems to be in the least densely populated area. Thanks for the advice!!
Thanks for the reply about picking up at the airport. I forgot to mention that we plan to spend the 13th and 14th in Dublin and then head out on the morning of the 15th. We plan to use public transportation while in Dublin to sightsee, so won't need the car those two days.
From my POV so much easier to rent at the airport and start your trip from there. Simply follow the traffic flow and don't speed. Nice highways into Waterford. Hour and a half, two and a halfhours at most. Get the GPS and have a good map. Really isn't that difficult. Slainte!
Deb, I'd rent at the airport and save yourself the logistics hassle. One big advantage of this is the large parking lots, they're great to drive around in to familerize yourself with the car. And as its the largest rental location in the country you'll have a better selection of cars. If your going south it's very easy to get on the motorway and avoid the city. Just don't forget to pay the toll, it's not much but you must pay it at gas stations or selected shops , I think within 24 hours. It's not an intuitive system , but it works for them.
Deb that changes everything. The 12ths a Sunday , the perfect day to drive around Dublin, check out Bull Island. Last time we were there on a Sunday we found loads of on street parking. There are a lot of B&BS that offer free over night parking. Dragging four adults with luggage on a airport bus just doesn't appeal to me, your chioce though.
For the tolls, you can also get a toll pass on the car as part of your rental agreement.
Thanks to everyone for your helpful replies. We may just pick up the car as soon as we land and head out of town. Then plan to return car and do last 2 days in Dublin using public transportation. Cheers!
