Is it possible to rent a car in Edinburgh and drop it off at Cairnryan/Stranraer (for the ferry to Belfast) or even in Glasgow which is closer to the ferry port? Or do we have to turn the car back in Edinburgh and then travel by train or bus to the ferry port?
You don't have to return the car to Edinburgh, you can turn it in at the Stanraer ferry terminal. Some companies might charge you a one-way dropoff fee, but my guess this is very unlikely. Don't know why you would consider dropping off in Glasgow; it's a 2-hour drive from there to Stanraer.
Thanks, Tom. Glad to hear that. I reserved an Enterprise car for pickup in Edinburgh and didn't see an online option for returning it anywhere else. Which companies allow a drop-off at Stranraer?
I just booked with Hertz and we can drop off the car at the Stranraer ferry terminal. Thanks for the help.
Yes, you can do this. I've often picked up a car in the north and dropped it off in Edinburgh. So you can pick it up in Edinburgh and drop off elsewhere. ; ) BTW if you are looking for a good book on driving in Scotland, pick up Iain Banks, Raw Spirit. It's about his search for the perfect dram, but it's also about all the car journey's he took to all the different distilleries. The wee roads are great if you like driving! Pam
