Car Rental in Scotland

Is it better to rent the car here before we go to Scotland or can we get it there? We are still hammering out what we want to do. I know we don't need a car in Edinburgh but we are planning to stay there the 13th and 14th to attend some Ceilidh Culture events in the evenings of those two nights and we were thinking that it would be good to have the car to do some sightseeing out and about but getting back to Edinburgh for the events each night. And I think we get a better rate if we rent for a full week rather than for 5 or 6 days. We have to get busy and get the car if we are going to do it at all. And we leave a week from tomorrow. I can't believe it is almost time to go! Pam

We usually reserve our car rental for GB or Europe from home. It seems to be the recommended practise from most others and has always worked out fine for us. Have a great trip! We'll be there in May, Bob

I too have always rented from the US as well. Where are you thinking of going for your day trips? I always rent a car, but there are some great day trips by train from Edinburgh. I prefer to pick up my car and leave Edinburgh behind. I've dropped the car in Glasgow and in Inverness. How much total time do you have in Scotland? You don't have to rent for the week. If you have to pay for parking that in. A lot of places don't have parking spots. So, that means finding a paid spot or searching out the odd legal street parking. Your B&B or hotel can help you with both. Pam

Thank you Bob & Pam We are planning on heading to Paisley, Glasgow, Stirling, & Bannockburn one day and St. Andrews and that area another. We want to see as much as we can outside of Edinburgh during the day and be back for the ceilidh that night. We land in Edinburgh around 9:30 am on the 13th and our flight out is at 7 am on the 22nd, so we have 9 days in Scotland. We don't know if there are any plans for the anniversary of the battle of Culloden but we want to head north on the 15th and be at the battlefield on the 16th. We are both big on Scots history. My paternal great grandfather was named Archibald Ross, Gram was born in 1921, the last of several kids, and she passed in 2006. After Inverness we want to head over to Callanish and Glencoe before heading back to Edinburgh on the afternoon of the 20th. Have you heard anything about Argus Car Hire? They have a compact automatic for $211 and change which inclusive of the CDW (25.72 GBP per day). Auto Europe is $347.26 for an Economy automatic also inclusive of the CDW. We've debated getting the car the 13th and doing a lot of driving out and around Edinburgh and dropping it on the 20th when we return to tour Edinburgh before we leave on the 22nd. All advice is welcome. I'm driving myself nuts trying to figure all of this out. Pam

Stirling can be done by train from Edinburgh. Bannockburn is easier with a car. One of the ways I've done this is to pick up my car in Edinburgh and head to Stirling. You can stop at Bannockburn on the way in and then park up at the castle. After touring the castle, and Argyle's lodging you can head north to your first night out of Edinburgh. Glasgow is easy to do by train. There are trains almost every half hour and can take less than an hour to get there. The only hard part is if you want to visit the Burrell Collection which is a bit out of town. Otherwise it's all in walking distance or you can take the subway out to the west end. What is taking you to Paisley? I am pretty sure that you can there by train as well. Pam

I work for a church and I love old churches and cathedrals. The Paisley Abbey is beautiful. There's a lot of history and the town sounds interesting on the Undiscovered Scotland page. Granted, I don't think we'll spend a great deal of time there. But there is some nice architecture there. Pam
