Does anyone know a car rental close to the Oxford train station? We are coming from York on train but want a car for Cotswolds.
AVIS is the closest being about 3 minutes away.
That's great. Thanks
Keep in mind that picking up a car close to the train station would require you to start out driving right in Oxford. That wouldn't be where I would want to get acquainted under pressure with an unfamiliar vehicle and driving on the left - not only the other vehicle traffic to contend with, but the many bicycles. There might be value in taking a taxi to a car rental place a bit in the outskirts where you could then more easily get more directly onto the motorway en route to your Cotswolds destination. Also, Enterprise used to pick up customers at the station and take them to their rental place. Not sure if they still do.
Most of the Oxford car hire firms will meet you at the station - Thrifty and Enterprise certainly will. However, it isn't necessary to negotiate the centre of Oxford from the station. Go the opposite direction along the Botley Road and take the western ring road A34 northward. I do hope this isn't a journey in works traffic though. Nearly all the major firms are situated on roads off the Botley Road as it happens.
You can check all the travel disruptions near Oxford, including a 'roadworks' filter, for the dates of your journey at: http://voyager.oxfordshire.gov.uk/network.aspx
Just to confirm, I've rented from Avis in Oxford (just behind the train station) and it's less than 5 minutes to the bypass on the west side of town....no traffic to deal with. AutoEurope uses Avis for Oxford, so compare their prices with the Avis website. AutoEurope requires a 3 day minimum rental; their cost for insurance is usually less than the rental company's.
Responses have been very helpful. Thanks everyone
I have rented a car rom Auto Europe in Oxford for the past two years. We pick the car up in Littlemeade Business Park. It is a short taxi ride from the bus station. I used via michelin driving directions along with a GPS. The Oxford train station is even closer to the car rental. Found them to be very nice and accomodating with the rental. Not terribly difficult getting out of the city from this area.Hope this helps.
