car rental / great britain and Ireland

I am going to Great Britain and Ireland for 3 weeks, is it best to rent a different car in each country ?
I have not finalized my schedule for visits, when I do I will know when I need to get a car and for how long.

Yes, it would be best to rent separately in each country. With the car, you are limited to traveling between the two by ferry, and some companies balk at letting you take their cars over. Also, if you planned to rent in one country and drop in the other you will face large drop-off fees. By renting in each country, you can fly between the two.

Agreeing with the previous poster on all points. You need a car much more in Ireland than England so I would plan as much of your trip by rail or coach as you can into one group and then rent a car for the rest. For instance a car in Dublin or London does you no good so exclude those portions and rent a car after these parts. If you want to share your interests or itinerary I'm sure people will have suggestions on the nest way to do this. Good luck,
