Has anyone dropped off a rental car at Victoria Station. My husband and I are picking up a car at Heathrow, spending a couple of nights at Stonehenge and Canterbury before heading to London. I've searched all the major car rental agencies but there is not a drop off either in Canterbury or near Leeds Castle but I do see one (Hertz I think) by Victoria Station. Is this a crazy idea?
"Is this a crazy idea?"
Well, I wouldn't say crazy--but this is one of those things that isn't going to enhance the quality of your vacation experience and you would probably want to avoid it, if there is a reasonable alternative.
In response to questions about driving in the core area of London (as opposed to the outskirts), the advice given here has overwhelmingly been not to do it, if there is any reasonable alternative. In fact, driving in the core area of London is not something many travelers on this site have ever done--well maybe once.
Let's see if others can help you come up with a reasonable alternative.
I personally would never even consider driving in London. There are zones where there are hefty fines for entering, and the traffic is terrible. That said -- If you are looking for a really easy way to get to Victoria Station, the Gatwick Express goes directly from Gatwick Airport to Victoria Station in about 30 or so minutes. Dropping a car off at Gatwick is very easy. I've done it multiple times. There are other places that will probably be suggested. At any rate, I'd stay on the outskirts of London with a car.
Just a suggestion too -- We were advised by locals to skip Stonehenge and go to Avebury. There is a big stone circle there and a great little museum, and you can walk amonst the stones. We were happy with our decision.
Thanks for the responses. We are going to Avebury also but my husband is a huge Stonehenge fan so we are opting for an inner access ticket as well. I guess that in order to avoid any tickets or hassles we will just drop the car at the airport.
Deb,
As the others have suggested, DO NOT drive in London. Not only is the traffic horrendous, but you'll also get 'nicked' with the Congestion Charge.
Aside from the airport, you could also drop the car at a nearby town and use either Train or Coach to London. One possibility would be to drop the car in Bath, as it's an easy trip from there to London. If you use Coach (National Express) to London Victoria Coach station, it's only a few blocks to London Victoria (rail) station, so you'll have easy access to the Tube.
Cheers!
when we drove from Stonehenge to London, we dropped the car at Heathrow and caught the tube to Victoria station. Easy as could be. (If you are headed to Victoria station, you will need to switch lines. Do it at the Hammersmith stop. You cross the platform and get on the other train..no stairs ,etc to muscle your luggage up and down.)
If your last stop is Canterbury, drop your car at Gatwick. Take a Southern train to Victoria (£9.60). Much cheaper than the Gatwick Express (£15.20).
thanks everyone. I haven't nailed down our itinerary yet so we will probably we dropping off at either Gatwick or Heathrow. Happy travels.
