A friend and I are looking at taking a ferry from Belfast to Scotland. We don't plan on having a car at this point. I see that there is a short ferry from Belfast to Stranraer. Does anyone know if there are car hire locations in Stranraer?
If not, are there any ferries that I may be missing that have convenient connections to a place with car rental locations? I see Belfast goes to Liverpool, but an arrival in Scotland would be ideal.

Depending on your plans in Scotland you may not want a car or may want to wait to get a car. Cars are definitely a hindrance (and expensive) in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Parking is expensive and scare, and the traffic often a nightmare.
So if you'll be heading to either of those locations, I would take the train and then pick up a car at one of the airports on your way out of the city. Otherwise, it still might be better to take public transport to one of the airports - you'll have the most options of rental car companies and get the best deals.
