I am planning my first trip backpacking in Europe with two other girls. I am unaware of the legal rules and would really appreciate feedback. Are we allowed to tour around to the Schengen countries for 90 days, then stay for another 30 days in Ireland? All help is really appreciated!
Your best bet would be to contact an Irish Embassy or consulate. To the best of my knowledge Ireland has never signed the agreement and you would think you would be okay but it is certainly best to know ahead of time.
Greetings
Yes, you will be fine. Ireland is not part of the Schengen Union so time there does not count against the Schengen time limit.
You need to ensure that your passports are stamped entering the EU and when you enter Ireland. That way there's no question about whether you overstayed (the info is also encoded in the swipe strip, but the stamps are easy to see and show).
If you will be in the EU for 3-4 months, you need to ensure that you have financial documents (bank statements etc.) showing funds sufficient to cover food, lodging and other expenses for that time period. It's important because, if they think you don't have enough money for the trip and thus a risk for working illegally, they can deny you entrance.
If you're not sure about funds, you should contact the consulate of the first country you will be entering and ask what they would consider sufficient funds per week or per month.
