Camp Eden - York

I have been researching York for a trip I plan to take in 2010, and I came across Camp Eden. Has anyone been here? If so, what did you think? I read their website, and it sounds interesting, but I would like views of people who have been there too. Thanks in advance!

Caitlin,

I found Eden Camp quite interesting, but I suppose being interested in WW-II history helps. As you probably noticed from their web site, this used to be a POW Camp for German and Italian prisoners during the war. As I recall, it was Britain's top tourist attraction for two different years.

There are about 20 or so (can't remember the exact number?) Huts, with each being arranged in a different theme. One features displays that show the prisoner experience, one the experience of civilians (rationing, etc.) and so on. I felt the displays were quite well presented (typical of British Museums), with articles being displayed as they might have been during the war along with mannequins dressed in the appropriate clothing. There were also lots of static displays in various parts of the camp - military vehicles, artillery pieces, a "Buzz Bomb", Spitfires, etc. Of course, there's a small "Canteen" as well, where visitors can buy refreshments.

I believe there are day trips possible from York, but I was driving so didn't bother checking into that. If you do decide to tour Eden Camp, I'd recommend allowing at least four hours for a proper visit.

Happy travels!

Thanks Ken! Your knowledge and opinions were very helpful (and thanks for correcting the name of the sight, LOL). I especially appreciate your recommendation to spend about four hours - it is always nice to know how much time to plan!
