I'll be in Cambridge for a week in early December and my dad will be traveling with me. Friday after work, we plan on going to Stratford for the weekend and then on to London before heading home Wednesday. What is the best (fastest and cheapest) way to get from Cambridge to Stratford? We're considering renting a car in Cambridge and dropping it off in Stratford, then taking the train to London. I appreciate any suggestions on this! Thanks.
According to www.viamichelin.com, it's about a two-hour drive from Cambridge to Stratford-upon-Avon.
According to www.nationalrail.co.uk, you can take a train from Cambridge to Birmingham New Street, go to Birmingham Moor Street, and take a train from there to Stratford-upon-Avon. The cheapest fare is £41.00. The total travel time is a little over four hours.
A direct train from Stratford to London takes a little over two hours. If you have to change trains, the trip will take a little over three hours.
I'd suggest having a car, or, doing a bus/car combination. Because it will be dark very early (and Friday traffic very hectic), I'd suggest taking a Nat'l Express bus to Oxford Friday evening (3 hrs 15 min and £10 each). You could then spend the night in Oxford and rent a car there the next morning. You'll enjoy the drive via the Cotswolds to Stratford. Otherwise, rent the car in Cambridge Sat. AM.
