I thought it would be neat to have both my Cambridge to ? queries next to each other,at least for a bit. The only way I can find to make this trip via public transportation is to go Cambridge to London and London to Oxford. That's about 3+ hours with changes. is there a better, more direct and shorter route? How far is it by car?
85ish miles, 2:30ish. If you don't run into traffic in Cambridge (hah!), Milton Keynes (hah!) or in Oxford. And if you can get parking - hen's teeth in Oxford, difficult in Cambridge. And if you don't offend the speed averaging speed cameras around Cambridge. I drive regularly between home and Cambridge and home and Oxford but never have I tried the very long drive between the two.
There is also the Stagecoach X5 coach.
Yes, look for the X5 coach route at www.stagecoachx5.com. I never took it myself but it should be tolerable. If you do drive into Oxford, definitely go to one of the park and rides and get the bus into town.
The coach is three and a quarter hours. You MIGHT be able to do it in less by train and tube passing through London if you already have an Oyster card and if the connections work.
It's not a bad trip from Oxford to Cambridge. The hard part is that you have to change train stations--Paddington to King's Cross. But, you can easily do this via the tube. If you're only renting a car to make that trip, I don't think I would do it. However, if you're renting a car so you can see other parts of the countryside then it might be worthwhile. Have you used google maps to look at the directions and times that they provide. Fun stuff--of course it plans for perfect transfers. ; ) The most direct route that they give is walking (25 hours), but you can do it by bike in less than 8 hours. ; ) PAm
