buying tartans

Any suggestions on where I should buy tartans? We'll be in Edinburgh, Lanarkshire and Highlands (Oban to Inverness whirlwind) in July. Thanks!

There are many, many quality places in Edinburgh. Be aware that true tartan wool is quality and generally expensive. A full kilt get-up can run in the high hundreds to thousands, and several yards of tartan cloth for a skirt could cost you near $100 or more. You can get tartan items a bit "cheaper"- ties, scarfs, blankets, shawls etc. Inverness also as some good tartan shops.

Some of it will depend on what tartan you are looking for. If its something common (MacDonald, Gordon, MacPherson, Campbell) there may be some random stores along the Royal Mile to buy pre-made skirts.
Geoffrey Tailor, Kiltmaker is one of the largest stores along the Royal Mile (closer to the Castle). However, like its been said before, the material is expensive! Here's a link to his website to give you an idea. From there, multiply it by 2.

There are some other woolen mills around Scotland. If you go to some of the smaller ones, it may not be as commercial. Regardless it will be expensive.
