Buying a sim card in ireland

We are going to Ireland in October and will be driving for 4 days outside Dublin. We want to be able to call if we have car problems or get lost. No desire to call outside the country. Which sim card is best to buy for the short visit and where would we buy it? We have an unlocked gsm phone already.

Roger, you could either buy a SIM card when you arrive in Ireland (there will probably be a cell shop in the airport), OR use a "travel SIM" from one of the travel phone firms - Call In Europe, Roam Simple, Cellular Abroad, Telestial or Mobal. That way the phone would be ready to go as soon as you land. ¶ BE SURE to check your "unlocked gsm phone" to ensure that it's a QUAD-BAND model. If it only has the two North American frequency bands, it WON'T work in Ireland (or anywhere else in Europe). Also, be sure to check the Phone Charger to ensure that it's designed for "world operation". Cheers!

Roger, I just returned (Sunday) from a two week trip to Ireland. I purchased a SIM card from Vodaphone which cost €10 and added €20 worth of airtime. It easily lasted for the two weeks including several calls back to the US. I just popped it into my phone and I was able to start using it right away. Just make sure that your phone is unlocked and that it is at least a tri-band phone.
