We are considering staying a few nights in the Cotswolds (Oddington) in late March, but would prefer to not rent a car. We may take our folding bikes, but know that weather can be an issue. The train goes to Kingham and/or Moreton-en-Marsh (and past Oddington with no stop). Are there any bus options?
There are a few different bus companies that serve the area. Below is the link to the Glos. County bus schedule. You'll probably have to search around a bit to find the right route.
This brochure has information on bus routes.
Yes, there are bus options. I would recommend taking the train to Moreton-in-Marsh and stay there. A lot of time when you get a bus from one small village going to another one you will need to change buses in Moreton-in-Marsh.
Good posts above explaining the bus options. You asked about the weather for biking in March; March is not a good time for biking, it can be wet, damp, and cool then. There are so many good choices in England in March, and you may decide that biking in March in the Cotswolds is not your best choice. Back to Suzanne's suggestion (above post): I can sure understand why you would prefer not to drive in the UK, and Suzanne's post explains another option that some travelers have found worked better for them, especially when there are a number of people sharing the cost of the guide. These travelers feel they get good value for the extra cost of a guide or tour, because it helped them to see and do more things, faster and more efficiently, eliminating the time waiting for and connecting with buses. The Cotswolds is one of those areas where a guide, tour or renting a car has been found by some travelers to make sense.
Thank you all for your responses. I think we will skip the Cotswolds this time - I'd really like to bike the area next time we are there and we need a different season. We'll opt to spend more time in London this trip and maybe a couple of days in Bath. Thanks.
Karen: I'm glad all the posters here, together, were able to help you make your decision (which sounds like a good one to me).
If there are three of you,it might be cheaper and more fun to have a private guide. This is what we did.Check at the local pub. One of the waitresses drove us anywhere we wanted to go and some places we never would have thought of.
