My husband, 10 year old son, 7 yr old daughter and I will be in Scotland this summer. Husband loves golf, I love literature. Anyone know of a good family place to stay in the Ayr area? (Culzean is too fancy!)
Sorry, I can't help you with lodging because it's been 20+ years since I've been there. But if you're renting a car, take the kids to the Electric Brae. Don't tell them beforehand and ruin the surprise. Here's the info. It was somewhere between Ayr and Culzean Castle.

You'll enjoy Burns cottage. There is also both horse racing and greyhound racing. Different tracks. Don't worry about the dogs being mistreated. This is the UK. They love their dogs.
