Budget hotel recommendations, please

I am off again - this time traveling solo to London for about 9-10 days at the beginning of September (then on to Paris via Eurostar). My basic plan is to be at the half-price ticket booth in Leicester Square almost every morning to buy tickets to plays. I will fit in some sightseeing in-between and perhaps one or two day trips out of the city. I have been to London several times, though not in last last 10 years or so.

I want a "budget" hotel that is conveniently located, air-conditioned , and clean. I am hoping that with the dollar so strong (and hopefully stays that way for another 3 months) I will be able to find something well under $100/night.

I would not worry too much about finding a hotel with air conditioning in London in September. The chance of a heatwave at that time is pretty slim. What the UK might consider "hot" is probably nowhere near what you might experience in Israel. I stayed in London in August once for an extended amount of time and most days I walked around wearing a Polartec jacket or a suede coat over a long sleeve t-shirt - I used the blankets on my bed every night and my room had no air conditioning.

Some of the university dorm rooms still offer single rooms in early September, but not all of them, so you will have to look online. They are a good option if you are trying to find something under $100 and, as your trip is more than a week, a dorm can also provide you with some extras like access to coin-op laundry facilities, kitchens where you can make a simple meal, and internet/WiFi.

I'm a big fan of the "basic" rooms at the Georgian House Hotel, which is just south of Victoria Station:

These rooms are on the 4th floor, and there's no elevator. They're tiny, a little shabby, and mostly have shared bathrooms, but they're also super cute and super affordable. If you book online, you get an Internet-only special of about $65 a night at current exchange rates, and they give you an additional 10% discount if you pay in full in advance. And the price includes a full and quite filling English breakfast.

Hi Chani: When I went solo to London in 2007 I stayed in a dorm room at Imperial College in S Ken. Private room with bath & breakie approx $85/Cdn a ngt. Of course you can only stay while the univ is not in session - usually till around the 27th of Sept. Here's the link: http://www.londonuniversityrooms.co.uk/book/rooms.aspx?locationId=2&vendorId=

I was quite happy with the room, even coffee & kettle in the room.
Here's another one you could try as well with a variety of campus', but I haven't stayed with them.

Good luck,

If you want something basic, clean, air conditioned, with ensuite shower and loo, for 25-35 pounds a night ($40-$50) try www.easyhotel.com.

All London locations are within a 5-10 minute walk to the nearest tube station.

Notoriously clean, simple, very small but private and quiet.

I stayed at the Earls Ct one all 3 of my London trips (creature of habit) and I have never paid more than 25 pounds a night. Sometimes it is even 20, depending on which one and how early you book it.

Try Travelodge at Covent Garden- if you book far enough ahaed you can get it really cheaply. Nice rooms with bath and shower, great location.

Or Imperial College, which is situated almost next door to the V&A museum. They run a hotel. No TV in the room, but cheap and clean.

I enjoyed the Garden Court Hotel 1.5 blocks from Kensington Park. More like a B&B. The opt. rooms w/o shower were very good for me and saved me alot of GBP. Elevator, internet and breakfast all VG. Nice neighborhood also and convenient to alot either by tube or walking.
