Since the '70s, I've been staying in the same hotel in Belgravia. The last two times, it's been a dirty mess and my husband and kids refuse to stay there again. I love the location, however, and would like to find something close to the Victoria station. Anything clean under $200 would be fine - suggestions?
Morgan Guest House: http://www.morganhouse.co.uk/index.htm Cherry Court Hotel: http://www.cherrycourthotel.co.uk/index.html Luna Simone: http://www.lunasimonehotel.com/ I have also found great discounted rates for London hotels on http://www.wotif.com/ Also, please check tripadvisor for traveler reviews and pictures of hotels. For example, here's the review of the Luna and Simone: http://goo.gl/oRVBt
What was your previous hotel in Belgravia? This is not TripAdvisor, but that is information some of us could use.
It has been a couple of years we have been pleased with the Lime Tree and the Hotel Winchester. Lime Tree is a block from VS and is more expensive but very nice. Winchester is a couple blocks south with a good English breakfast and is less expensive or it was.
Thanks for the recommendations! Roy, our former hotel was the Stanley House. The sheets had holes and dirt on them; the floor was covered in dust; the window would not shut and had tape on it; there was no heat (it was March); the only working lamp was a giant florescent shop light, hovering several feet above the beds; the bathroom door would swell shut and the kids couldn't get out after a shower (at least the water was hot); the bathroom was a disaster - mold, water wouldn't drain, NASTY; the soap was used and had hair on it; the breakfasts were a farce; there were always shifty-looking men loitering around the registration desk. It continues to be a running joke in our house, and a good experience for the kids to have had. But never again.
I have stayed at both the Morgan Guest Rooms and the Lynton Hotel, both right on Ebury, just a couple blocks from Victoria. Both are decent budget places and within your budget. The Lynton is maybe a bit more roomy and one of the owners does pretty much everything himself, Morgan House a bit tighter with a few staff handling the duties.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I had just booked the Morgan Guest House for a week in March and was hoping you were not referring to it. If this is any help, below are the results I came up with for that area after culling my list to three places: Neighborhood: Victoria Station Morgan Guest House: Belgravia, West of Victoria Station, s-E58, Rec by Rick Steves, Fodors; Good Reviews on TripAdvisor; Favorables: Location, neighborhood, friendly owners, character of place. Unfavorables: Thin mattresses. Cherry Court Hotel: East of Victoria Station, sb-E50, Rec by Rick Steves, Good Reviews by TripAdvisor. Favorables: Location, price, nonsmoking. Unfavorables: Fruit basket instead of breakfast buffet.
Bakers Hotel: East of Victoria Station, s-E40, Rec by Ric Steves. TA Reviews: Mixed to Poor. Reviews Favorables: Great price, brightly painted. Unfavorables: Extremely small rooms, rooms too hot in winter, hot water turned off. Booking.com Score: 6.9 (Note: The pound symbol changed to capital e on text conversion.)
Thanks, everyone. Roy and Paul, I've just made inquiries into the Morgan Guest House and am considering two rooms (no available quad room for my dates). But I do appreciate all input!
Cara, I stayed at This Hotel on my last trip to London, and was pleased with the service and the quality. The room was somewhat "basic" and a bit small, but very comfortable (that's common with "singles" anywhere). There's no Elevator but I didn't find the stairs to be a problem. The breakfast was fantastic! A lot of fast food restaurants could take a lesson from Derek's culinary skills! The Hotel is located on Ebury street, about half a block from the Ebury Wine Bar and just around the corner from the Victoria Coach station. Victoria (rail) station is about an ten minute walk. It's a really nice area! Happy travels!
I've been to London about 8-10 times and have stayed at Morgan Guest House all but 3 times...and will stay there in the future unless already booked. I didn't think the mattresses were thin, but they are a bit soft but trust me, after walking London all day you'll sleep on anything! I was just there this past Tuesday night and they're re-wallpapering/painting and it was looking good. The English breakfast is great!
Thanks, all! I have booked the Morgan Guest House and am prepared to enjoy it.
Ken, We booked there a week ago for a summer trip. So glad to hear your comments
I posted previously but my husband and I loved the Luna Simone, would highly recommend it. Room was tiny, but neat and clean and had everything we needed. Best of all were the two brothers that run it and have done so for 40years. We like family run, mom and pop places and we don,t need any frills, it ran about 160 dollars a night August 2011, 2 twin beds, but I think there were some quads. Loved the neighborhood, very safe, can walk to many places plus a handy bus stops right out in front.
