we are planning our trip for late sept-oct 2012 to the uk.
is it too early to purchase train passes? do they expire or need to be validated at an earlier date than our scheduled trip?

Don, no it is not too early. You just have to begin using them for the first time 6 months from the date of purchase. Check out the Bonus Day offer (good on passes purchased through April 13) on this site under the Railpasses tab. Everything is explained there.
