I have a couple days to get from London to Paris, and I'm considering taking the train from London to Poole, and then the ferry from Poole to Cherbourg, and then the train from Cherbourg to Paris.
This would be in mid-May. Has anyone done anything similar, or have any hints, suggestions, or recommendations?
If you want to do it, why not. Before the Tunnel we did it routinely (from Dover, Harwich or wherever). If you have a couple of days, think about taking a ferry to the Channel islands, spend a day or two and then ferry on to France. seems an opportunity not to be missed
It is a slow way to go but why not? You are on vacation. Who is in a hurry? We did the same thing only in reverse and it was relaxing. But did make you think about June , 1944.
Well that's not the fastest way, but could be pretty neat. My parents took Portsmouth to various places frequently, as do my uncle and aunt but we've never done Poole. Don't know how far from the station the ferry port is. If that appeals to you, go for it.
Matt, I have taken a similar route, ie., solo from London to Folkesstone by train, where you go through Passport Control before boarding the ferry to Boulogne-sur-Mer, took a taxi to the train station for the next train to Paris Nord via Amiens, which I should have visited at the time. Not until past 2330 did I arrive at Gare du Nord, which I was totally unfamiliar with. That was in August 1987. Gare du Nord is way nicer now than it was back then If you want to see Cherbourg (haven't been there yet) for a day or two before Paris, I would take the ferry route. Boulogne is interesting and historical, visited it later on a couple of day trips from Nord Pas-de-Calais. Now I go by EuroStar.
We did the bus from London Victoria Station to Paris. Obviously, we also took the ferry. Trip was relaxing. We like riding ferries, so it was a double dipper for us. Cheap fare to Paris and ferry trip included.
If you think you'd enjoy seeing the coast towns and riding the ferry, go for it. My ferry ride from France to England was one of the worst storms they ever had and everyone on board was horribly sick. Hopefully you'll have better weather.
