Bristol airport instead of Heathrow to get to Wales

I thought had to fly into Heathrow (flying from Cleveland Ohio via New York City, probably) to start our vacation in Wales. But now I've heard that landing at Bristol Airport is an option. Bristol seems to make more sense since it is closer to Wales where we will be spending 10 days. We wouldn't have to drive 2-3 hours west to get to our first destination (Tintern Abbey), plus we'd avoid the hassles of landing and picking up a rental car at a bigger airport. Does anyone have any experience of the Bristol Airport? Any words of advice on landing at Bristol vs. Heathrow? Any difference in the cost of flights? Thanks!

Continental flies non-stop from Newark to Bristol. (It's a 757 which is a narrowbody jet--one aisle.)

You'd need to check Continental's website on the days you want to travel to see if the prices are better or worse.

Also see if there are any flights to Birmingham Airport. It's also a small airport about 1 hour 40 mins drive to Tintern Abbey.

Hi Diane,

you maybe lucky enough to fly to Cardiff International airport. I have flown to Orlando a couple of times from there (as I'm Welsh). Try Googling New York to Cardiff flights. It seemed that Delta & continental fly to new York.

Cheers
Steve.

Brisol airport is out in the boonies with limited transport connections. If you are renting a car, this is not a problem, but you will need to go into Bristol if you are depending on public transport.

Bristol Airport is certainly outside of the town. But bus transportation is easy and quick (I even had the bus driver give me private tour about town once on my way to the train station).

It's a nice, small, modern airport. I avoid London (both airports) if I can. I have flown into Bristol several times on my way to Swansea. The only way to go as far as I'm concerned.

Enjoy.
