Bringing Jameson TO Ireland, per a request . . .

A woman we are visiting in Ireland asked us to bring her a bottle of Jameson because she says that it is cheaper in the U.S. than it is there. Go figure. Options - should we buy it in a duty-free shop at the airport in Ireland on the way in? Are bottles allowed in the checked luggage? Any tips? Many thanks.

How much cheaper can it be?

You can put a bottle in your checked luggage, but you run the risk of it breaking. How many bottles does she want? I'm sure there are restrictions for how much alcohol you can take into Ireland. The duty free shops are for outbound flights, not arrivals.

And you are allowed to shop at the Duty Free as you're leaving the US...

(By the way, in some cases you can shop duty-free on your way into a country; there's a shop in Singapore located between immigration and baggage claim/customs just for this purpose.)

@ Peter - I was responding to her question about buying it duty free when she arrives in Ireland. I was referring to the Dublin airport when I stated there was no duty free shop when you arrive, only when you leave.

Thanks all. I agree that it was a funny request (made me laugh) but one which I intend to honor. I think that I'll just buy an expensive bottle or two there, bite the bullet, even though there is a good sale today at the local grocery store.

I couldn't figure out whether the duty free shops were for coming in as well as leaving becuase I believe that I've seen both as well but wasn't sure.

Thanks again.

BevMo, Trade Joes or some Costcos tend to have Jameson for the cheapest prices.

The 12 year (aka 1780) is very nice.

Be aware that Irish customs law allows you to bring in one liter only. Price check: a 750 ml bottle of Jameson's 12-year-old is $39.99 at Binney's in Chicago; at the Celtic Whiskey Shop in Dublin (online), it's 25.92 euros - about $31 at today's conversion rate.

You can ask her what a liter costs in Ireland and you can easily determine if it will save her money. Anyway, you're visting her so you might just do it anyway and consider it a present.

I've brought liquor back on my trips. I wrap it carefully with clothes. I've never had one break.

I used to work for a European company. Vistors from over the pond would buy French wine by the case and ship it back to Belgium. They said it was cheaper than the same wine over there. They could also get vintages that were not availble to them in Europe. The ones who did this were real wine affectionados and I assume they were right.

The only thing I've ever discovered that was cheaper in Europe was Chimay. That's a Belgian beer.

According to our hostess, Jameson is twice the price in Ireland than in U.S. Perhaps because she lives in a remote place she pays more than if she were in a city. We'll just find her a nice bottle once we arrive.

Thanks again for all the information.
