booking trains in Scotland

I need to travel from Troon to Edinburgh and I would like to get my train tickets ahead of time. I tried ScotRail's web site, and it seems like I can only have the tickets mailed to me if I live in Great Britain (which I don't). Or that I can pick up the tickets at certain stations, but Troon isn't one of ones listed. Should I just wait until I get there and buy the tickets at the station in Troon? Do trains ever fill up completely?

This looks like it will be regional trains. It's 22 pounds so, i bet you can buy it once you get there. It looks like you go through Glasgow. There are lots of choices to Edinburgh from Glasgow and it looks like there are almost as many from Troon to Glasgow. I have often taken the train from Glasgow to Edinburgh and I never book it in advance. I have booked longer trips. I actually had a travel agent get a ticket for me once, but that was for a longer trip from Edinburgh to Liverpool.

You can book your tickets on line at http://nationalexpresseastcoast.com . It shows Troon as a pickup spot. By using the "enter an international address" part during the billing process, you can use a non U-K credit card. By booking on this site, you can get tickets as low as 13.90 GBP. Most trains go to Glasgow Central, then require you to catch the Edinburgh train at Glasgow Queen Street, which is just a few minutes' walk away. But if you select one of the journeys that runs less than 2:10, you'll find they make the connection at Central, so no need to shift to the other railway station.

And added note...there was a free shuttle between the two stations a couple of years ago...I'm not sure if it still runs, but it's not a long walk.

Thanks for the advice. I've decided to just buy the ticket at the Troon station. I did book my tickets from Edinburgh to Inverness online though just in case.

Ellen,

you should be just fine to purchase your ticket when you are in country. If you have time, I might recommend spending some time in and around Inverness. I found it to be quite nice. Enjoy your travels!
