We are traveling to Europe in June and will participate in the RS Scandinavia Tour. We will go to Paris first and end our trip in the Wengen area. I am very familiar with UAL's web site and have used it for several international trips. I started checking airfares in Sept 2011 for the following multi city itinerary:
06/05/12 DEN – IAD – CDG open jaw to 06/27/12 ZUR – IAD – DEN. The total ticket price has varied from $1656 to $1829. On 01/5/12 I called UAL to ask why the airfare was so high when very few seats were sold on the international legs. They checked my itinerary, the same flights, and initially said the total cost would be $1000. They waved the telephone booking fee. When they sold me the ticket it went to $1437. I guess the agent was mistaken on the $1000 but they saved me about $400 per round trip ticket at the $1437 cost. I am posting this to encourage those of you traveling to Europe on UAL in June to call them to check their cost before you book online. I think the merger with Continental has delayed accurate on line ticket costs on their web site.
I haven't found better prices by calling United, but I found better routing for my upcoming Guatemala trip by doing so. Back in the day, I used to call the same airline at least twice because I found that different agents would quote different prices. Or maybe the price fluctuated so frequently that I got better quotes at different times. BTW, my guess is that the original quoted price of $1000 did not include taxes and fees. Once those were added, the final price was $1437. Thanks for posting.
