Hi everyone! As my husband and I finalize the Norway section of our trip (where we will spend one week), we are considering the following: Depart Bergen (after spending two nights there) and take express ferry up Sognefjord to Flam Rent car in Flam (apparently there are car rentals in Flam) Drive to Aurland where we will spend one night; explore "snow road" and Stegatstein Viewpoint. Drive to Balestrand where we will spend one night; explore surrounding areas. Drive to Solvorn to spend the night; have car to visit Jostedal's Nigard Glacier. Drive back to Flam, off car. Take train to Oslo (as part of Norway in a Nutshell tour?) Will this work? Have any of you rented a car in Flam? I looked at the Fjord1 website at the timetables, and had a very difficult time understanding it. (Dense American, I know.) From what I gather, the express ferry leaves Bergen at 8 in the morning and arrives in Flam at 1:25 in the afternoon. I think. From there, the goal is to find the Europecar place in Flam to pick up a reserved car. Tips? Suggestions? Thanks!

Tara, I live in Pasco County and have some of the same questions. We will be driving from Pulpit Rock to the fjords. I am trying to find out if we can put our new volvo (we are picking it up in Goteborg) on any of the ferries in the fjords. We are trying to get to the same towns you are. I understand we will need ferry reservations but I sure can't find any good websites that help! Let me know what you find out!!

Hi neighbor! I've been using Fjord1 to look at ferry schedules. Also, I just discovered the forums over at Trip Advisor. They have some specific to Norway, to the western fjords, etc. Destination experts post there and the information is very specific. I've been pleased with both of these forums (Rick Steves and Trip Advisor) so you might just check it out!

I am trying to use those. They rarely indicate if a ferry is one that accepts cars or just passengers. I missed booking the right ferry from Denmark to Norway already! Now I have to take one that arrives at 1:15 in the morning!! I think that most accept cars. It appears you just drive up. I am looking for some that travel a long ways up the fjords.
When and where are you going? FYI, my son graduated from Sarasota High in 2002.

We will be there in August. In reading RS book, it appears the express ferry from Bergen does not take cars. There are car ferries along the Sonjefjord, but we really just want to rent when we get there. This may be difficult. I'm calling Europcar in the morning to hopefully get some answers.
