My son and his fiance are going to Scotland for their honeymoon in September. He asked me if there was a good place to bike. I've never biked in Scotland, and most of the places I've been to were pretty hilly. Does any one know of any place in Scotland you can rent bikes? And where the biking is not too strenuous? They don't have their itinerary set yet, so they are open to any place.
The National Cycle Network would be worth a look.
Mountain biking is big in the Borders try the 7 Stanes. The Borders are a really quiet area for road traffic but small villages give plenty of places to stop off at.
I agree that most of Scotland is pretty hilly and the bikers I've seen have been struggling mightily up those hills. Most recently we drove through a bike race near Applecross. It was rigorous and and very wet race. One place to think about might be Orkney. There are fewer hills and it's small and you can get around to a lot of the mainland on a bike. And, it looks like you can rent bikes there. http://www.cycleorkney.com/ As I already said you can bike on the mainland, but you could also take a ferry to Hoy or the other islands and explore them by bike. You might also want to post on TripAdvisor and ask the locals. BTW if you've not been to Orkney, it truly is a wonderful place. There is lots of history and the towns are small and friendly. The craft trails are great as well. If they are into diving there are tours out into Scappa Flow. Pam
